Castle Vígľaš

Vígľaš Castle is located in the heart of Slovakia, close to town Zvolen in the valley of Slatina River. The castle from the 13th century was reconstructed and opened as a four-star hotel in 2014. Hotel Grand Vígľaš offers accommodation in 55 historic rooms of various types. Two restaurants and a bar are available for our guests. The hotel's wellness center has a swimming pool, two saunas, jacuzzi, relaxation area and two massage rooms. Nice combination of past and present creates the right atmosphere for a fairytale wedding, a family gathering, but also a successful conference.

History timeline

13. centrury
Vígľaš Castle was established in the 13th century by the initiative of King Béla IV as part of Hungary’s defensive system against the Mongol threat.
First half of the 14th century
Charles Robert used Vígľaš Castle as a hunting residence, from where the golden boom of Hungary began after the discovery of deposits near Banská Štiavnica.
Second half of the 14th century

Reign of King Louis I the Great, son of Charles Robert of Anjou – Vígľaš Castle served both as a fortress and a favored royal residence.

15th Century
During Sigismund’s reign, Vígľaš Castle became the center of royal life, the birthplace of Princess Elizabeth, and the seat of the Order of the Dragon. Barbara of Celje, Sigismund’s wife, was one of the most powerful women of her time and led the empire’s defense and political affairs from Vígľaš Castle.
17th Century

From the 17th century, Vígľaš Castle belonged to the noble Trivulzio family, whose members ruled there until the 19th century, leaving behind a mysterious history full of secrets.

21st Century
After nearly seven decades of abandonment, Vígľaš Castle was restored and reopened in 2014 as a luxury hotel, and in 2019 the legendary Order of the Dragon was revived there.
